#5. Inspections All your OSHA Compliant Inspection needs are performed by experienced certified technicians.
Question: Why Should I Inspect My Overhead Cranes and Hoists?
Answer: There are several reasons why to inspect your overhead bridge cranes and hoists. The most important reason is wear and tear. Just as any mechanical parts, such as car parts, they wear out with use, the lifting and transporting of heavy objects will wear trolley wheels, wire ropes, the load chain, I beam flanges, motors, load brakes and gearboxes. There are three types of inspections you should consider:
Daily Visual – which is performed by the crane/ hoist operator prior to each shift (Required)
Monthly or Periodic Inspections (Quarterly) – High duty cycle cranes might require inspections more frequently to ensure proper function.
Annual Inspections – Required by OSHA for most overhead cranes to ensure safe operation of the crane. (Required)
Authorities on Overhead Crane and Hoist Inspections: While our techs at NHC go through inspection training courses to keep up on the regulatory standards on a regular basis, we encourage you to read the documents yourself. Below are the standard to which OSHA, ANSI, and CMAA specify the regulations and definitions of overhead cranes.
REGULATORY STANDARD:
OSHA – 29 CFR 1910.179 – Overhead and Gantry Cranes
OSHA – 29 CFR 1926.550 – Cranes and Derricks
OSHA – 29 CFR 1903.1 (The General Duty Clause)
CMAA – Spec. No. 70 and 74
Annual Inspection Items Annual inspections are a minimum for proper safe use of cranes and hoists. Below are few of the items that NHC looks at during an annual inspection.
Check for deformed, cracked or corroded members
Check for loose bolts or rivets typically using such tools as a torque wrench
Check for worn sheaves and drums and your hoists
Worn, cracked or distorted parts, such as pins, bearings, gears, rollers, etc.
Look for excessive wear on disc and shoe brakes typical for crane motors
Check for wear of chain drive sprockets and chain
Look at electrical components, such as push-buttons, limit switches or contactors and check for deterioration.
